My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

R. A. MAYES, Graves County, was born March 22, 1840, in Mayfield. He is a son of Richard L. and Elizabeth (Anderson) Mayes. The father was born in Fayette County, Ky., in December, 1805; he died in January, 1861. He came to Mayfield, in 1827, and at once engaged in the practice of law. Ho held the office of county attorney, also of commonwealth’s attorney, and represented this county in the State legislature; he was also a member of the convention of 1849-50, which formed the present constitution of the State. Our subject read law with his father, and was admitted to the bar in 1860, and was soon after elected county attorney. At the close of the war he discontinued the practice of law and was deputy county clerk from 1866 to 1869. From 1870 to 1873 he was engaged as book-keeper in the commission business in New Orleans; he then returned to Mayfield and opened a hardware and furniture store, which he now carries on; he also owns one-half interest in the Mayfield flouring-mill; this he purchased in 1878. Mr. Mayes was married on November 5, 1863, to Isabella Boyd, of Christian County. She died in 1865, aged nineteen, leaving one daughter. His second marriage was in 1874 to Sue Campbell, of Nashville, Tenn. This lady died April 30, 1876, aged twenty-nine years.
