Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DR. J. D. LANDRUM, of Graves County, was born in Barren County, Ky., October 1, 1822. He is the son of James and Nancy (Walden) Landrum. The father was born in Amherst County, Va.; he died in 1841, aged sixty-two. The mother was born in King William County, Va., and died in March,, 1863, aged sixty-two. Dr. Landrum was reared in Trigg County, Ky., and in 1845 he commenced the study of medicine with Dr. L. Lindsay; he also studied with Drs. McKinney and Drain, in all about four years. He matriculated in the Phisio-Medical College, of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1848, and graduated from the same in 1853. He then went to Lafayette, Ky., where he engaged in the practice of his profession, and he also practiced at Roaring Springs. In December, 1851, he came to Mayfield, where he has since been located. In 1863 he was elected State senator, and served in this body four years. In 1864 he was elected Grand Master of the Grand Lodge, A. F. & A. M., of Kentucky, and served one term. Dr. Landrum was married in 1850 to Catherine Robbins, of Roaring Springs, Ky. They have five children—three sons and two daughters. Dr. and Mrs. Landrum are members of the Christian Church.
