My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

CHARLES I. SHERRILL was born May 14, 1852, in Stewart County, Tenn. He is a son of J. S. and Elizabeth A. (Stevenson) Sherrill. The father was born in Christian County, Ky., and died in 1878, aged fifty-seven years. He owned a farm in Graves County, and was considered one of the best farmers in the section. He handled large quantities of tobacco, as high as from 800,000 to 1,000,000 pounds in a year. Charles was brought up on his father’s farm, and at the death of the latter bought out his mother’s interest and managed the farm until her death, which occurred August 30, 1883. He then sold this farm and bought another, one mile southwest of Mayfield, consisting of 160 acres. December 1, 1883, he engaged in the livery business in Mayfield, which he still continues. This is known as the “Mammoth Stable,” and well deserves this name, as the stock kept here is not excelled by any in this part of the State. Mr. Sherrill was married, in November, 1877, to Miss Alice B. Swain, of Henry County, Tenn. One son has blessed this union. Mr. Sherrill is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and of the Masonic fraternity. Mrs. Sherrill is a member of the Christian Church.
