Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM VALENTINE SALES, a farmer and stock grower of Glencoe, Gallatin County, was born in Owen County, Ky., February 14, 1835. His father, William Sales, a native of Owen County, was born about 1805, and was a farmer by occupation. He was a major in the Mexican war, and politically he was a Democrat, and served as sheriff of Owen County one term. He married Nancy Scruggs, a native of Scott County. Seven sons and three daughters were born to this union, of whom the subject of this sketch is the seventh child. William Sales, the paternal grandfather of William V., was a native of Scott County, and a farmer by occupation. William Valentine Sales has been a farmer all his life; he owns 110 acres of well cultivated land near Glencoe. In 1862 he enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army, Company G, Fourth Kentucky Cavalry, under command of Col. Henry Giltner, and participated in the battles of Raytown, Blue Springs, Beard’s Station, Mount Sterling, Missionary Ridge, and many others. He was discharged at New Liberty, Ky., at the close of the war, and, returning home, engaged in farming, and is also engaged in the hotel and livery business at Glencoe. He married Anna M. (Greene) Spencer, of Gallatin County, and a daughter of Willis and Arlie (Lillard) Greene, natives of Kentucky. One son — William Robert — blessed their union. Mr. Sales is a member of the Baptist Church.
