Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

SAMUEL P. GRIFFIN, a prominent merchant of Warsaw, and a native of Gallatin County, Ky., was born August 23, 1844. His father, Benjamin F. Griffin, a native of Fayette County, was born in 1818, and was a farmer by occupation; for many years he was assessor of Gallatin County, and was also revenue collector for the Sixth District of Kentucky for three years. He married Sidney Hoggins of Gallatin County, a daughter of William Hoggins, who bore him six sons and three daughters, of whom our subject is the third child. Mrs. Sidney Hoggins died in 1870; she was for many years a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Levi Griffin, the paternal grandfather of Samuel P., was a native of Culpeper County, Va., and a farmer; he moved to Kentucky at an early day, and first settled in Bourbon County, but subsequently went to Fayette County, where he lived for a short time, and then moved to Gallatin County, where he died. He took part in the war of 1812. Samuel P. Griffin was educated in the common schools of Gallatin County; he was reared on the farm, where he remained until 1876, when he engaged in general merchandising. December 10, 1868, he married Alice B. Smith, of Owen County, daughter of William B. and Lucretia (Orr) Smith, natives of Kentucky. The birth of one son and one daughter followed this union, viz.: Lillian G. and William S. Politically Mr. Griffin is a Republican. He and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
