Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

W. P. NOLEN, Fulton County, was born March 14, 1844, in Paducah, Ky., and is a son of William and Huldah A. (Becker) Nolen. The father was born in Pennsylvania, of German descent. The mother was born in Livingston County, Ky., and was of French descent. W. P. is the fourth of eight children, four boys and four girls. He received his education in Paducah. In 1863 he began life as a clerk in his father’s hardware store at Paducah, where he remained until 1867. In 1877 he removed to Fulton, Ky., where he engaged in the hardware business. In the spring of 1881 he entered the employment of the Southern Express Company at Fulton, and is still engaged by them. In October, 1865, he was married to Miss Julia E. Cook, of Paducah, and a daughter of Marcus and Amelia Cook. The father was a native of Virginia and a lumberman by occupation. He was one of the first men to put up a planing-mill at Paducah. This marriage has resulted in the following children: Marcus C., Bettie C., Julia and W. P., Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Nolen are members of the Episcopal Church. He is also a member of the Masonic fraternity.
