My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

W. D. HUTCHISON is a native of Dixon County, Tenn., where he was born on August 3, 1821. His father, John T. Hutchison, was a farmer and millwright; he died about 1858, aged sixty-eight years. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, and came to Hickman in 1836. Subject’s mother was Elizabeth (Turner) Hutchison; she died in 1828 at the age of forty-five years. The paternal grandfather of subject was James Hutchison, a Virginian; he emigrated to Tennessee in 1811, settling near Clarksville, Montgomery County, where he died about the year 1853. W. D. Hutchison passed his youth and early manhood on his father’s farm, and at the age of twenty two engaged in business for himself as a peddler in the employ of H. P. Dorris of Clarksville, with whom he remained two years. He next drove a stage between Clarksville and Hopkinsville, retaining that position two years, and then worked as a farm laborer in Robertson County, Tenn. After staying in said county for a period of two years, he came to Fulton County, Ky., where he bought a lease, on which he resided for three years. He was married March 29, 1849, to Ellen Rebecca, daughter of Robert and Michael Rama, of Kentucky. After marriage Mr. Hutchison engaged in farming, and in 1850 moved near the Mississippi River, about ten miles below Hickman. In 1865 he bought the farm near the Tennessee State line, where he now resides. Mr. and Mrs. Hutchison were never blessed with any children of their own, but during their long married life have reared a number of orphan children, several of whom live to bless them for their unselfish interest in their welfare. Mr. Hutchison is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and an active worker in the cause of temperance, belonging to several temperance organizations, and he and wife are members of the Missionary Baptist Church.
