Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JUDGE R. S. MURRELL is a native of Weakley County, Tenn., and was born September 25, 1848. His father, J. B. Murrell, was born in Missouri, and is living in the town of Fulton, Ky., at the present time, where he is engaged in an active real estate business. The maiden name of subject’s mother was Mary Jane Davis. She was a native of Kentucky, and died in 1866, at the age of thirty years. Subject remained on his father’s farm until he was eighteen years of age, when he commenced teaching in the common schools of the county, and two years later entered the law office of Col. Ervin Anderson, of Mayfield, where he remained until 1871, at which time he was admitted to the bar. Since then he has been actively engaged in the practice of his profession, in Graves and Fulton Counties. For four years he was engaged in the newspaper business, in Mayfield and Fulton, in connection with the legal profession, and in 1878 was elected city attorney of Mayfield, serving in that capacity one year. In August, 1872, he was elected county judge of Fulton County by a handsome majority, which office he now holds. He is an active member of the Masonic fraternity, I. O. O. F., K. of H. and the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Politically Mr. Murrell is identified with the Democratic party.
