My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

N. COMBS, one of the oldest living settlers of Fulton County, came to this part of the Purchase in 1835, and settled on the State line, about five miles south of Hickman, where he purchased a tract of land and opened a farm. He was born February 16, 1805, in Murray County, Tenn., and is the son of William and Nancy (Cahill) Combs, both early pioneers of Murray County. The grandfather of our subject was William Combs, a native of Virginia, where he died many years ago. The father of our subject emigrated to Tennessee the same year subject was born; he was a farmer and overseer; the date of his death was not ascertained; the mother died about the year 1849 or 1850. Our subject commenced life for himself at the early age of fifteen years, finding employment at various vocations until the time of his arrival in this county, as mentioned above. He purchased his present farm of 150 acres at the close of the war, and has one of the best homesteads in the southern part of Fulton. On the place is one of the largest and best mineral springs in western Kentucky, and one which is destined, at no distant day, to become a favorite summer resort. Mr. Combs was married in 1837 to Catherine Rogers, of Tennessee. They have one child, Louisa, wife of John H. Liggett.
