My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN BARNES was born October 24, 1819, in Henry County, Ky. He is a son of Samuel Barnes, whose father, Samuel Barnes, Sr., emigrated from Virginia shortly after the Revolutionary war, and settled in Kentucky, where he died in 1344, at the advanced age of ninety-six years. Samuel Barnes, Jr., was a farmer and died in Henry County, Ky., in 1880, at the age of eighty-six years; his wife, Sallie (Adams) Barnes, was a daughter of David Adams, of Ireland. She died about the year 1834, aged thirty-six years. Subject is the second child and eldest son of a family of eight children. He stayed with his father until twenty-three years of age, and in 1842 came to Fulton County, Ky., which has since been his home. For the first ten years after his arrival he lived with the family of Mr. Adams, but in the meantime purchased a tract of 160 acres of land, lying about five miles south of Hickman, on which he opened a good farm. He has added to the place from time to time until he is now the possessor of 440 acres of as good land as there is in Fulton County. He was married March 6, 1870, to Sallie, daughter of Samuel and Martha (Growder) Chandler, of Tennessee. Several children were born to this union, but all of them died in infancy.
