Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN A. HUGHS was born November 26, 1840, in Hickman County, Ky., where he grew to manhood, and in 1869 removed to Fulton County, where he still retains his residence. His father, John Hughs, was born in North Carolina in 1805, and died in 1859. He was the son of Ezekiel, a soldier of the Revolution. Subject’s mother, Mary, daughter of Elisha Parker, died in 1876, at the age of sixty-four years. To her and husband were born Henry W., Melinda (Orton), Jacob P., subject, Mary A. (Handley), and Rhoda E. (Holland). July 26, 1866, subject was married to Miss Margaret D., daughter of Asa and Sarah (Wright) Phelps of Hickman County, and to them were born Dessie, Rozetta, Lem (deceased), John A., Arthur and Solon. Mr. Hughs is a successful farmer, owning 160 acres of valuable and productive land. Near his cottage he has a deer park, in which may be seen sporting the antlered buck, the graceful doe, and speckled fawn. In religion Mr. Hughs is a Cumberland Presbyterian and in politics a Democrat.
