Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

J. H. SIMMONS, Fulton County, was born in Davidson County, Tenn., March 5, 1827, and is the eldest of twelve children of Ephraim and Susan (Gower) Simmons, both natives of Tennessee. The father was a farmer and died in 1866; the mother died in 1882. Subject was reared on a farm and received a good practical education, and at the age of eighteen years, engaged as a clerk with a firm at Sycamore Mills, then went to Nashville, where he remained five or six years. He then went to Rutherford County, Tenn., and started a store of his own at the town of Smyrna, where he conducted a business for a period of seven years, when he sold out and came to Fulton County, Ky., locating about six miles from Hickman. He purchased his present farm in 1869, and is now the owner of 360 acres of fine land, the greater part of which has been brought to a high state of cultivation. In 1855 he married Miss S. C. Fitzhugh, of Tennessee. This union has been blessed with two children, one of whom is dead; the one living, Leonard D., is a young man of fine business qualifications. Mr. Simmons is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and belongs to the Christian Church. His wife is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
