My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

HARDIN MADDOX, a native of Shelby County, Ky., and third child of Elijah and Sarah (Clark) Maddox, was born September 15, 1820. The paternal grandfather of subject was a Wilson Maddox, a native of Virginia and a soldier in the war of the Revolution; he immigrated to Kentucky in an early day, settling in Shelby County, where he died about 1841 or 1842, at the advanced age of ninety years. Elijah Maddox was one of the earliest settlers of Fulton County, having come in January, 1826, and opening a farm on which his son, Hardin, now lives, was a resident of the county until the time of his death in 1849. Subject’s mother died on September 5, 1841. Hardin was but six years of age when his parents moved to this part of Kentucky, and from an almost unbroken wilderness he has seen the country developed to its present advanced state of civilization. He remained with his parents on the home farm and looked after their interests until their death, when he acquired possession of the homestead on which he has since resided. He was married November 12, 1845, to Mrs. Susan A. Bradley, daughter of R. and Eliza (Berry) Duffey. Six children were born to this union: Sallie, William Henry, Effie, Leonard, Eliza and Annie. Mr. Maddox is one of the substantial farmers of Fulton County, owning a beautiful tract of 350 acres of land, 200 of which are under cultivation. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity and belongs to the Christian Church, as does also his wife.
