Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

C. L. RANDLE, Fulton County, was born September 13, 1829, in Stewart County, Tenn., and is a son of William and Lucinda (Edwards) Randle, natives of Tennessee. The father was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and died in 1869, at the age of sixty-four; his widow is living with her son at Rock Mills, Ala. C. L. Randle is the eldest of nine children; he remained on his father’s farm until he was sixteen, when he engaged with Plummer & Co., of Nashville, Tenn., as clerk for his board and clothes. After remaining with them for eleven months he was admitted to a partnership, which position he occupied for two years. He then went into partnership with Thomas Ross, remained with him for three years, studied law in the meantime, and attended two sessions of the Cumberland University at Lebanon, Tenn.; he was admitted to practice by William Harris and J. O. W. Totton, judges of the supreme court, in 1856. In January, 1857, he came to Hickman, where he has since been actively engaged in the practice of his profession with great success. He has served as city attorney and city clerk. At the beginning of the war he entered the Confederate Army, in Company E, First Kentucky Regiment, served a year in Virginia, after which he came west and entered the cavalry service, being commissioned captain of Company A, Seventh Kentucky, acting as assistant-adjutant general in Lyon’s brigade. He was wounded at the battle of Tishomingo Creek, and was captured by Wilson’s cavalry April 1, 1865. At the close of the war he returned to Hickman, and resumed his profession. In 1868 he was elected common wealth’s attorney for the First Judicial District and served one term. Mr. Handle was married February 14, 1868, to Miss Maggie Mitchell, of Tennessee, by whom he has had five children, four of whom are living: William M., Robert E., Findley M. and Kate M. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the Royal Templars of Temperance, and he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Mr. Handle was assistant elector for the State at large on the ticket supporting Stephen A. Douglas, and did good work in the campaign. He is a Democrat in politics.
