My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

A. T. MITCHELL, Fulton County, was born October 26, 1843, in Bourbon County, Ky., and is the second of a family of three sons born to John H. and Susan A. (Butler) Mitchell, natives of Montgomery County, Ky., and of Scotch-Irish and German descent respectively. Subject’s grandparents, James W. and Betty (Jones) Mitchell, and William and Mary (Shortridge) Butler, were all natives of Culpeper County, Va., and came to Kentucky as early as 1820, settling near the line between Bourbon and Montgomery Counties. Subject received his education in Bethany, W. Va., and was in the graduating class at the breaking out of the war. In May, 1861, the college closed and he returned home. He found that his brother had enlisted in the Confederate Army, and so he remained at home with his mother, his father having died when he was quite young. At the close of the war, he began clerking in the National Bank, at Mt. Sterling, Ky., and subsequently served as teller there one year. In 1869 he organized a bank at Middletown, Ky., and remained there some ten or twelve years. October, 8, 1883, he organized the Fulton Bank, and has since been engaged here. The bank has a capital of $50,000, with the privilege of increasing it to $200,000. He was married in April, 1865, to Miss Anna Rice, of Bourbon County, and a daughter of Col. James and Patsey (Boyle) Rice, natives of Kentucky, and of Scotch and Irish origin. Two children, Linnie P. and Cammie, have resulted from this union. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell are members of the Christian Church; he is a member of the Masonic fraternity.
