Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

ROBERT ELLIS was born in Ghent, Carroll Co., Ky., December 6, 1844, and is the third of a family of nine children born to Timothy and Olivia (Evans) Ellis, natives of Kentucky. Timothy Ellis was a blacksmith, and followed his trade all his life. Robert Ellis was reared in Ghent, Carroll County, where he received his education. In 1862 he joined the Confederate Army as a private in the Fourth Kentucky Cavalry, under Col. Giltner, and served until the close of the war, when he returned to Carroll County, Ky., and devoted his time to farming and school teaching until 1873. He then engaged in the mercantile business at Sparta, and remained here until 1881, when he moved to Sanders Station, and engaged in his present business, a merchant. March 6, 1873, he married Sallie Ellis, a daughter of Solomon and Bettie (Kirby) Ellis, of Gallatin County, Ky. Four children have blessed their union — three daughters and one son — viz.: Solomon T. (deceased), Little E. (deceased), Bertie and Sallie. Mrs. Ellis died in 1882, and April 14, 1885, Mr. Ellis married Mary H. Elmore, daughter of James M. and Hester (Thompson) Elmore, of Owen County, Ky. They are members of the Christian Church. Mr. Ellis is a Royal Arch Mason, and a member of the F. & A. M. Politically he is a Democrat.
