Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

ROBERT E. COX, the third son of Charles H. and Jane (Furnish) Cox, was born June 16, 1860, in Carroll County, Ky. Charles H. Cox came from Virginia, and settled in Carroll County about 1837; for many years operated a woolen-mill at Ghent; was for several years a flat-boat pilot to New Orleans, and now resides on his farm near Ghent. Mrs. Jane Cox was born in Gallatin County, Ky., but her father, John Furnish, was a native of Virginia. In December, 1884, Robert E. Cox married Miss Bland Hayden, daughter of J. J. and Sarah (Harrison) Hayden, of Carroll County. On the 4th of March, 1883, Mr. Cox, in partnership with J. H. Lindsay, opened a livery and sale stable in Carrollton, but at the end of the year sold his interest to Mr. Lindsay, and built, in partnership with his brother, Charles Cox, a new frame stable, 44x90 feet, and the new firm is doing a prosperous business. Mr. Cox is an Odd Fellow, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
