Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

RICHARD V. COLLINS, a native of Boone County, Ky., was born December 3, 1832, and is the sixth child born to Richard and Susan (Scott) Collins, natives respectively of New York and Virginia. Stephen Collins, paternal grandfather of our subject, was a native of New York, of Irish extraction, who settled in Kenton County, Ky. He also served in the war of 1812. Richard Collins, father of R. V. Collins, was born in 1801, moved from Kenton to Boone County, and was quite a prominent physician at Burlington. He died in 1871. Richard V. Collins was reared in Burlington, and when fourteen years of age attended school at Covington, Ky., where he took an academical course. In 1851 he moved to Carroll County and engaged in farming. He now owns a farm of 250 acres four and one-half miles northwest of Carrollton. January 10, 1863, he married Miss Gertrude, daughter of Elsie and Louisa (Shackelford) Carrico, of Carroll County, but natives of Maryland and Kentucky. Six children have been born to their union: Thomas C., Carrie, Richard B., Anna, Gertrude and George W.
