My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN W. DAVIS was born in Carroll County, Ky., April 22, 1850, the youngest son of Hardin and Lucinda (Tandy) Davis, also natives of Carroll County, but of Virginian descent. The paternal grandfather, also named Hardin, settled in the State prior to 1800, eight miles east of Carrollton, and was a major in the war of 1812. The maternal grandfather, John Tandy, settled in the same neighborhood about the same time. The younger Hardin Davis, father of John W., was born in 1801, was a farmer, and died in 1865. John W. Davis was reared on the home farm, and educated in the local schools. In 1879 he began selling goods at Eagle, but relinquished this trade in 1884, and became railroad ticket agent at Sanders. In June, 1886, he was appointed deputy sheriff under William Whitehead, and still holds that office. September 26, 1870, he married Miss Maxil Bronaugh, of Carroll County, and there has been one child born to him — Allie B. Mr. Davis is a Knight of Pythias, and the owner of a farm of 120 acres.
