Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887. These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary. JOHN DEAN, Sr., a native of Huntingdon County, Penn., was born August 16, 1800, and in the second son born to John and Jane (Whitnel) Dean, natives of Pennsylvania and Maryland. John Dean, father of our subject, served in the Revolution; he settled in Carroll County, one and one-half miles from Port Royal, now Carrollton, in 1810. He was a farmer, and died in 1835, at the age of eighty-three. John Dean, Sr., our subject, was reared on the farm, and educated in the schools of his native county. March 5, 1832, he married Susan Sarlls, a native of Ohio, and a daughter of Elijah Sarlls, an early citizen of Carroll County. Eight children blessed this union, viz.: William E., Ollie, Richard B., Nicholas B., Julius B., Silas H., John, Jr., and Mary E., the latter deceased. Mr. Dean owns about 300 acres of land in Carroll County, and during the war was for the preservation of the Union.
