My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM HOLMAN was born February 5, 1809, in Henry County, Ky., and is the fourth of ten children born to William and Polly (Foster) Holman, of English and Irish descent, and natives of Maryland and Virginia respectively. William Holman assisted in erecting the first cabin built in Cincinnati, Ohio. Shortly after, the grandfather of our subject and two of his sons were killed by the Indians, in surveying in the Ohio Purchase. William Holman was reared on a farm and lived with his parents until he became of age. In 1818, he with his parents moved to Ripley County, Ind., where his father entered 160 acres for each one of his children. Our subject lived in Indiana until 1853, when he moved to where he now resides on the Ohio River, in Ballard County. Ky. He purchased 1,000 acres of land, which he mostly improved, and now owns about 488 acres, 175 of which are cleared. He was married in October, 1829, to Sarah Hawthorn, of Henry County, Ky., daughter of James and Willie (Rollan) Hawthorn, natives of Ireland and England respectively. To this union were born thirteen children: James H., now in California; Henry F., Martha (now dead) married a Mr. Shook; William S. (deceased); George M.; Jesse C. (deceased), Amanda M. and Sarah C., both married to Duncans; Roseta M. (deceased), Joseph T. (deceased), Mildred R. (deceased), Polly A. (deceased), she was married to a Mr. Colvin; Eliza E., now Wyatt. Mrs. Holman was a member of the Baptist Church. On December 25, 1856, Mr. Holman married Cabriella D. Bates, of Ballard County, born in Garrard County, Ky., and a daughter of Gabriel and Elizabeth Bates. To them were born three children: Laura B., now Holt; Aura B. deceased, and Willie, deceased; the first two were twins. Mrs. Cabriella Holman died October, 1877; she was a Baptist. Mr. Holman next married, on October 10, 1880, Mrs. Mary E. Robinson, of Ballard County, daughter of William and Mary (Tyler) Sublett, natives of Virginia and Kentucky, respectively. Mrs. Holman had seven children by her former husband. Mr. and Mrs. Holman are members of the Baptist and Christian Churches, respectively. Mr. Holman was formerly connected with the Masonic fraternity. He cast his first presidential vote for Gen. Jackson, but voted the Whig ticket from 1840 to 1856; since 1860, he has voted the Democratic ticket.
