My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM E. HALL, Ballard County, was born June 20, 1823, in Henry County, Ky., and is a son of John and Altha (Porter) Hall, both born in Virginia. In 1827 they moved to Hickman County, Ky., and located at Mills’ Point; two years later the mother died at this place, when subject was taken by his grandfather, Eli Porter, on horseback again to Henry County; they remained there until the spring of 1831, at which time the family came to Hickman, now Ballard County, and settled in the neighborhood of Arlington. Young Hall was reared on a farm, and at the age of eighteen, entered a store as clerk at Cape Girardeau, Mo., where he remained for three years. He then returned to this county and purchased 100 acres of land, and from time to time, as his means would permit, he added other lands owning at one time as high as 545 acres, part of which he has since disposed of; he now owns about 200 acres well improved, adjoining Arlington, also several houses and lots in town; he originally owned the land on which the town of Arlington is built. Mr. Hall has held the office of constable, also clerk and judge of election. He was married in 1848, in Henry County, to Elizabeth Hall of that county. This union has been blessed with seven children, five of whom are living: Rev. J. N. Hall, now residing in Fulton, Ky., is the eldest son; he has charge of four churches in that vicinity; he also assists in editing the Baptist Gleaner: Jo. G., the fourth son, also lives in Fulton, and is in the employ of the railroad company; Thomas P., now engaged in farming in Ballard County; George C., now attending school in Arlington; Mary A., now the wife of A. J. Bailey, engaged in farming in Arlington Precinct. Mr. Hall and family are consistent and exemplary members of the Baptist Church, and for the past thirty years he has been a deacon. There were but two improved farms in this vicinity at the time of Mr. Hall’s first coming here in 1831.
