My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

W. W. JENKINS, a native of Ballard County, Ky., and son of Dr. Thomas J. and Susan M. (Terrell) Jenkins, was born March 20, 1846. His paternal grandfather was Francis Jenkins, who was born July 14, 1774, and died in Pickens District, S. C., in 1860. John Terrell, subject’s maternal grandfather, was born in Virginia, from which State he emigrated in an early day, settling at Port Royal, Tenn., where he died about the year 1838 or 1840. Thomas J. Jenkins, subject’s father, was a physician of considerable note. He graduated at the Transylvania University, of Lexington, Ky., and commenced the practice of his profession in Ballard County in 1840. He died May 6, 1870, aged fifty-eight years; his wife died in March, 1863 at the age of forty-five years. At the age of twenty years our subject commenced teaching in the public schools of Ballard County, and later entered a store as clerk, in which capacity he served two years. He next entered the mercantile business at Hinkleville in partnership with his father, and sold goods until 1870. In 1872 he moved to Blandville and engaged in merchandising, which he continued until 1874, at which time he was elected clerk of the circuit court, was re-elected in 1880, and is still holding the office. He was married June 24, 1869, to Alice P., daughter of H. B. and Sophie Lacy, of Christian County, Ky. Five children bless this union: Oriana, Pearl N., Thomas B., Willie D. and Sophie Mildred. Mr. Jenkins is a member of the I. O. O. F., K. of H. and K. and L. of H., and votes the Democratic ticket; he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
