My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography included in History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

W. M. GEORGE was born in Milburn, Ballard County, Ky., on December 5, 1836, and is a son of Reuben and Indiana (Gray) George. The father was born in Henry County, Ky., on March 6, 1802. His parents, Edward and Mary (Thomas) George, came from Orange County, Va., to Kentucky in a very early day. Edward George came to Ballard County, in March 1834, accompanied by his family and settled within one mile of the present village of Milburn. While a resident of Henry County he was a representative in the legislature from Henry and Owen Counties for many years. Soon after his arrival here, he was elected to the legislature from Ballard County, but died before taking his seat in December, 1836. The father of our subject inherited his father’s farm and is yet living in this district at an advanced age. For upward of thirty years, he was one of the magistrates of the Milburn District, but was compelled finally to refuse a re-election on account of advancing years. The mother of our subject died in October, 1879. W. M. George was the third of five children, of whom two are still living, viz.: Thomas J. and William M. The latter’s schooling was received in the village of Milburn. He worked on the home farm, until he was about twenty-five, and then learned the trade of brick-mason, which he followed until 1879. He was then elected magistrate of his district and is still serving in that position. He was a Federal soldier in the late war, having enlisted on December 12, 1863, in Company E, of the Thirtieth Kentucky Mounted Infantry, under Col. Alexander, and served until April, 1865.
