My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

W. D. HARRISON was born October 9, 1844, in Christian County, Ky., and is the fourth of nine children, seven boys and two girls (two boys and one girl now living), born to Fayette and Harrie (Bradshaw) Harrison. The grandparents, Robert and Sarah (Davis) Harrison, were reared in Virginia and were of Scotch descent. The former was a farmer and miller, and came to Christian County about the year 1800. The father of our subject was born in Christian County about 1814. W. D. Harrison was reared on a farm and received a good English education. He had been in attendance at Russellville College about eight months when the war broke out, when he returned and attended school near home. In 1856 he moved with his parents to McCracken County, Ky., and settled in the southwestern part, where he lived till 1880, when he moved to where he now resides, in Ballard County, on 283 acres of land in North Ballard, where his father had purchased 1,000 acres before coming to the Purchase, with a view of settling on it. Our subject lived with his parents till he was about twenty-four years old, when he went to Paducah, where he was engaged for six years as salesman by W. T. Overstreet & Co.; he then returned to the home farm, where he remained till he came to his present place. He was married June 19, 1879, to Miss Mallie E. Hopson of Paducah, daughter of George and Nellie (Enders) Hopson. Her father was a native of Trigg County, Ky. Mr. Harrison had born to him by this union one child, Mary Harrison. He and wife are Presbyterians, and our subject cast his first presidential vote for H. Seymour in 1868.
