Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

THOMAS L. HILL was born October 21, 1847, in Bardstown, Nelson Co., Ky. He is the ninth of ten children born to James and Elizabeth (Medley) Hill, natives of Nelson County and Hardin County, Ky., respectively, and of Irish descent. The grandfather was Joseph Hill, a farmer, born and reared in Maryland. The grandfather on the mother’s side was John Medley, a farmer, born in Virginia. They were among the early settlers of Kentucky. Thomas L. was reared on a farm and received a good common school education. He moved with his parents to Danville, Ind., in February, 1864, where his father died while engaged in the practice of medicine. Our subject returned to Nelson County, in the fall of 1865, where he engaged in farming. In 1868 he moved to Spencer County, Ky. In the fall of 1869 he returned to Danville, Ind., in 1869 he moved to Ballard County, Ky. He located where he now resides in 1881, on fifty acres of good land in good condition. He was elected justice in 1880 for three years. On November 21, 1872, he married Georgia Robinson, of McCracken County, Ky. She was born in Butler County, Ky., a daughter of William and Mary (Sublett) Robinson, natives of Virginia and Kentucky respectively. To this union were born six children: Ernest R., Frances P., Mary B., Bertha, Thomas M., Ella T. Mr. Hill and wife are members of the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Hill cast his first presidential vote for Seymour and Blair in 1868, and still votes with the Democrats.
