My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

SAMUEL W. JACKSON, Ballard County, was born in Hickman County, Ky., February 5, 1841, and is the second of nine children born to Ephraim and Mary E. (Wheeler) Jack son, both natives of Kentucky, and of English and Irish descent. Ephraim Jackson received such an education as could be obtained at the rude log schoolhouses of western Kentucky frontier during his youth. At the age of three years, he came with his parents to Hickman County, where he was employed on his father’s farm until he attained his majority. In that county he was married, and soon after engaged in farming on his own account. In about 1845, he removed to the southeast corner of Ballard County, where he bought a farm and resided until 1858, when he sold out and removed to Texas. While there, Mrs. Mary E. Jackson departed this life on May 8, 1861. She was a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. In 1867, Mr. Jackson returned and bought a farm in Ballard County, near Arlington, where he resided until his death, which occurred June 8, 1875, in his fifty-eight year. He was a life-long and devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South; was also a member of the Masonic fraternity. Samuel W. Jackson received a good common school education in youth, and was employed on his father’s farm until he was nearly thirty years old. He then engaged in agricultural pursuits on his own account, and has been so employed ever since, now owning well improved farms in Ballard County amounting to 170 acres. In the spring of 1861, he enlisted in Company D, Third Texas Cavalry, and served with his regiment in all its marches and engagements until the close of the war, being under Gens. McCullach, Price, Van Dorn, Bragg, Johnston and Hood. He participated in the battles of Pea Ridge, Iuka, Second Corinth and Jackson, Miss. In May, 1864, he was taken prisoner near Resaca, Ga., and was paroled in March, 1865. Mr. Jackson was married December 11, 1870, to Miss Anna I. Ramsey, a native of Ballard County, Ky. Five children have blessed this union, four of whom, two sons and two daughters, are living. Both Mr. Jackson and wife are consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He is also an earnest advocate of the temperance cause. In politics he is a Democrat.
