Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DR. R. T. HOCKER, Ballard County, was born September 10, 1846, in Warren County, Ky. He is a son of Washington and Rebekah (Magill) Hocker, both natives of Lincoln County, Ky.; his father is now living on his farm in Graves County. Our subject commenced the study of medicine at the age of twenty, under the preceptorship of Drs. Thompson and Gilson at Paducah, where he remained one year. He then attended the medical department of the University of Nashville in the winter of 1867-68, and graduated February 24, 1870; he had commenced the practice of medicine September 11, 1868. The doctor located in Ballard County, and in 1873 returned to Graves County, and located at Lowe’s; there he followed his chosen profession nine years. November 14, 1882, he moved to Clinton, followed his profession there till May 1, 1884, when he came to Arlington, and in company with Dr. Peck opened their present drug store and is also following his profession here. He is a member of the Kentucky State Medical Society. In 1873, Dr. Hocker was vice-president of the Southwestern Kentucky Medical Association. He has been president of the Graves County Medical Society, and also treasurer. His father served as magistrate, constable and deputy sheriff in central Kentucky for many years; also police judge of Lovelaceville, Ballard County. Dr. Hocker was married December 3, 1873, to Miss M. S. Peck, of Graves County; two children have blessed this union, one daughter and one son. He is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church; his wife is a member of the Baptist Church. The doctor is also a member of the Masonic order and I. O. O. F.; has filled the highest offices in the subordinate lodges of each, and was a member of the city council when in Clinton.
