Below is a family biography included in History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

PRESTON S. BROWN, Jr., was born October 12, 1840, in Todd County, Ky., where he grew to manhood, and in 1860 removed to Ballard County, where he has since resided. His father, Preston S. Brown, Sr., born near Richmond, Va., in 1800, removed to Todd County in 1805, was a courier in the war of 1812, and is still living. He is the son of John Brown, a soldier of the war of 1812, who died in Macoupin County, Ill., in 1854, aged over ninety years. Preston S., Sr., was twice married, and by his first wife had born to him one son, Albert H. He afterward married Rosina, daughter of Jesse Smith, of Todd County; she died in 1879, aged sixty-three years; her children are subject, Elijah C. and Virginia F. (Lawson). Subject was favored with a good education, and is a reading man. He was married April 24, 1863, to Miss Ophelia, daughter of James M. and Ann (Brown) Tisdall, of Harrison County, born in 1844, and to them have been born Mollie E. (deceased), Jessie. W., Ella (deceased), James P., Thomas J., Jennie, Lute, Lillie and Sam Oscar. Subject is a farmer owning 200 acres of good land; 108 on the home place in a high state of cultivation. He is a Mason, a K. of H. and a Democrat.
