P. H. GUPTON was born April 5, 1851, in Christian County, Ky., and is the eldest of six children born to Granville and Emily J. (Bondurant) Gupton, natives of Kentucky and Virginia, and of Irish and French descent respectively. The father is a son of Fenton Gupton, who was a farmer and boat man. P. H. Gupton was reared on a farm, and attended the common schools when not engaged in farm duties. He came with his parents in 1864 to South Ballard, where his father purchased 225 acres of land, which he improved. Our subject lived with his parents until he became of age, when he commenced life for himself at farming, and purchased 117 acres of land. He has since added till he now owns 340 acres, all in good condition. In 1880 he was elected sheriff of Ballard County, and in 1882 re-elected. He is a member of the K. of H., and the K. & L. of H. He has made life a success, having started with $100 only. He was married November 20, 1883, to Mattie D. Cooper, of Tazewell County, Ill., and daughter of Thomas Cooper.
