JOSEPH T. MURPHY was born October 24, 1846, in Graves County, Ky., when he was reared and lived till 1869, when he came to Ballard County, the place of his present residence. His father, William Murphy, a native of Pittsylvania County, Va., was born in 1808, and died in 1876. William married Charity E. Wynn, of Caswell County, N. C., born in 1812, and now living. Their children are: Mary S. (Ross), Edward H., subject, Zachary T., George W., Rebecca G. and Adda B. (Lovelace). In youth our subject procured a common school education, and is a reading man. He is a member of the I. O. O. F.; also a Baptist and affiliates with the Democratic party.
