Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN M. NICHOLS, one of the leading attorneys of Ballard County, was born December 25, 1846, in Caldwell County, Ky., and is the youngest of nine children (five of them boys) born to Jesse and Elizabeth (Wadlington) Nichols, natives of Kentucky, the father of German and English, the mother of Welsh and English descent. The mother died in September, 1862; the father was born in October, 1804, and died July 23, 1884. The family moved to McCracken County, Ky., about 1849, thence to Missouri, in 1852, but returned in a very short time to Ballard County, and to McCracken. John M. Nichols was reared a farmer, but at the age of nineteen years commenced the study of law with Col. George W. Morrow, of Paducah, also studied with Z. W. Bugg, of Blandville. In the meantime, he taught school and worked on the farm to get funds to continue his studies; he was admitted to the bar, in the fall of 1869, by Judge Boone and Judge Crossland; in 1870 he located at Blandville, where he has pursued with unabated energy the practice of his profession till today he stands at the head of his profession in Ballard County. He has accumulated a goodly property in Blandville. He was married in November, 1871, to Joseph Ann Foree of Ballard County, daughter of Joseph and Agnes (Young) Foree, natives of Shelby and Ballard Counties, Ky., respectively. There have been born to this union six children: Jesse F., Nora, Willie (deceased), Agnes, Andrew and Sallie. Mrs. Nichols is a member of the Christian Church. Mr. Nichols cast his first vote for Seymour and Blair, in 1868, and still votes with the Democratic party.
