My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN L. MOSS, Ballard County, was born in Green County, Ky., August 21, 1852, and is one of the eight sons born to William H. and Sarah J. (Price) Moss, both natives of Green County, Ky., and of Welsh descent. William H. Moss was educated and married in his native county, where he also learned the blacksmith trade, which he has followed nearly all his life. In the fall of 1857, he removed to Columbus, Hickman Co., Ky., and remained two years. He then removed to the eastern part of the same county, where he now resides, and has since been engaged in agricultural pursuits. He is a veteran of the war with Mexico, having held a lieutenant’s commission in one of the Kentucky regiments, and participated in the battle of Buena Vista, under Gen. Taylor. He also held a lieutenant’s commission in Faulkner’s Partisan Rangers during the late civil war. He and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church; he is also a member of the Masonic fraternity, and was for a time sheriff of Hickman County. John L. Moss was employed on the home farm until he was twenty-five years old. He then leased a farm in the southwestern part of Ballard County, where he was employed in agricultural pursuits until 1882, when he sold out, and has since been engaged in the grain trade at Berkeley. He was justice of the peace in Ballard County for three years, from 1880 to 1883. He was married, December 27, 1876, to Miss Sarah A. Evans, a native of Hickman County, Tenn. Three children blessed this union, two of whom, one son and one daughter, are yet living. Mrs. Sarah A. Moss departed this life, January 13, 1883. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Moss is a member of the same church, and in politics is a Democrat.
