Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JESSE W. NANCE was born January 28, 1852, in Christian County, Ky., where he grew to manhood. In 1874 he came to Ballard County, where he has since resided. His father, Lilborn Nance, a native of Trigg County, Ky., was born in 1822 and died in 1859. He was the son of Joel Nance, a Virginian, who served in the war of 1812, and died in 1878, at the age of eighty-four years. Subject’s mother, Dollie, daughter of Jesse and Disia (Jones) Giles, a native of Halifax County, Va., was born in 1823, and is still living. She was married to Lilborn November 24, 1844, and to them were born: Joel G., Mary E. (Bracken), Sarah J. (Hines), subject, Emma T. (Harding), and Edward V. Joel (senior’s) children were William, Lilborn, Benjamin B. and Mary T. (Lindsay and Cayce). Our subject is a farmer, superintending his mother’s farm of 380 acres, upon which he is successfully cultivating wheat, corn, tobacco and other products of the country. In politics Mr. Nance affiliates with the Democratic party.
