Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JACOB HORN, Ballard County, was born April 15, 1831, in Hesse Darmstadt. In 1851, he came to the United States and worked ten years in a stove foundry in St Louis, after which he engaged in the butchering business in Memphis, for five years, and in 1868, settled in Ballard County, Ky., at his present place of residence. His father, Anton, born in 1800, died in Germany in 1871. He married Catherine Winter (born in 1805, died in 1849), and their children are, Eugene, Frantz, Jacob and David. Jacob procured a good education in Germany. On February 8, 1857, he married Miss Kunigunda Ley (born in Baden, March 3, 1837), and the results of this union are John, Elizabeth (Kilgore), Emma, Pauline, Anton, and Nicholas. Mrs. Horn died March 18, 1885. Mr. Horn is a farmer, having 560 acres of productive land in a good state of cultivation. In religion he still adheres to the Catholic faith, in which he was reared, and in politics is a Democrat. The members of his family belong to the Christian Church.
