My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DR. HERMAN REID, deceased, was born in Green County, Ky., on July 16, 1816, and was a son of John and Mary (Lockett) Reid. The father died when subject was quite young. He was then taken to east Tennessee, where he lived with his mother’s people. He remained with his grandfather until he was sixteen, and then started out for himself and acquired an education. He then turned his attention to the study of medicine, and graduated from the university at Louisville about 1840. In 1841 he came to Milburn, where he practiced almost constantly until his death, which occurred on January 7, 1874. At one time he also had a drug store in Milburn, which he conducted until the breaking out of the war. He was married to Miss Lucretia R. Pile, who still survives him. The result of this union was the following children: E. O., born November 19, 1845; M. E., born September 27, 1849, now wife of W. S. Duncan; F. Q., born January 23, 1852, and now wife of G. W. Greenup; W. C, born February 24, 1854; A. L., born December 6, 1856, and now wife of A. E. Crews; H. C., born May 8, 1859; R. L.. born December 4, 1861; Lillie H, born October 23, 1868; E. H., born March 26, 1871. Subject was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and Masonic fraternity, and was at one time postmaster at Milburn. Dr. E. O. Reid, the eldest son, was born in Milburn. His education was received in the schools of his native county, and at the age of nineteen he commenced reading medicine with his father; he studied with him two years and then attended lectures at Louisville, graduating in the class of 1869. He then settled in Dublin, Graves County, but only remained one year. He then came to Milburn and entered into business with his father. This partnership continued until the death of the latter, and then E. O. continued by himself. He also established a drug and dry goods store, which he conducted until 1881. He then sold out and moved to Clinton. There he has since engaged in the dry goods business under the firm name of E. O. Reid & Co., and in the real estate business with the firm of Ray & Reid. Dr. E. O. Reid was married in 1870 to Miss Alice L. Trainnum, of Paducah. This lady died in 1876, leaving two children, a son and a daughter. In 1880 he married Miss Sue M. Dodge. This lady is a member of the Methodist Church South. Dr. H. C. Reid, the sixth of the nine children of Dr. Herman Reid, was also born in Milburn. His literary education was received in the schools of his native town and at Lebanon, Ohio. He read medicine with his brother, E. O. Reid, and then attended lectures at the Kentucky School of Medicine, graduating in the class of 1881. Returning to Milburn he entered upon the practice of his chosen profession, and has since met with fair success. In 1881 he also purchased the drug store which had been previously operated by his brother, and now carries a stock of about $1,000. He is at present postmaster at Milburn; as was also his brother before the latter’s departure. Dr. H. C. Reid was married on October 17, 1888, to Miss Lena M. Milburn, a daughter of C. W. and A. E. (Smedley) Milburn. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and his wife is a member of the Christian Church. Dr. W. C. Reid read medicine under Dr. E. O. Reid, attended lectures at Bellevue Hospital, New York, and at Louisville, Ky., from which latter city he graduated. He next practiced a year in Hickman County, Ky., and then with Dr. E. O. Reid, at Milburn, until his removal to California, in 1877. He now resides at Mariposa, Cal., has charge of the county hospital, and is also engaged in a general mercantile business, in connection with the practice of his profession.
