My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

GUSTAVUS A. NORTHINGTON was born February 28, 1832, in Robertson County, Tenn. He is the third of thirteen children (six boys) born to Samuel and Sarah W. (Walton) Northington, natives of North Carolina, and of Scotch and English descent. Subject’s father was the son of Samuel Northington, who married a Miss Jones, both natives of Virginia. His grandfather, on mother’s side, was Edward Walton. Gustavus A. Northington was reared on a farm, attended Clarksville (Tenn.) Academy, and at the age of eighteen years engaged as salesman for three years, when he commenced business on his own account. In 1853 he clerked in a commission house, in Memphis, for six months. In April, 1858, he moved to where he now resides on 1,200 acres of land, about one-half cleared and in good condition, and has also carried on a general store ever since he has been in the county. He owned a number of negroes before the war, but has made most of his accumulations by his own industry and economy. He married in June, 1862, Susan Vaughan, of Ballard County, a native of Montgomery County, Tenn., and daughter of Granderson and Elizabeth (Nevel) Vaughan, natives of North Carolina, and had born to him by this union five children, three living: Samuel G., Bettie W. and Vaughan. His wife died in 1881, a member of the Christian Church. In September, 1847, Mr. Northington married M. J. Maner, of Ballard County, a native of Todd County, and daughter of W. C. and Mary (Ferguson) Maner. He had born to him by this union four children: Mamie, Carrie, Jennie and Jesse. Mr. Northington cast his first presidential vote for James Buchanan and is still a Democrat.
