Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

GEN. J. VAUGHN, Ballard County, was born September 19, 1834, in White County, Tenn., and came with his parents, in 1849, to Ballard County, Ky., where he still retains his residence. His father, James Vaughn, a native of Halifax County, Va., was born in 1800, and is still living. He was the son of Jourdan Vaughn, of Virginia. James married Lutricia, born in 1808, daughter of Spencer Holder, and this union was blessed with William H., Francis M., Hickison F., subject, Azariah M., James N., Britannia (Davis) and Spencer. Subject received a fair education, and is well informed by general reading. He was married August 28, 1853, to Miss Agnes, daughter of William and America (Dale) Bishop, of Ballard County, born March 1, 1838, and to them have been born Caledonia T. (Webb), Berryman B., Robert L., Lucretia C., Azariah, Nannetta and Ionia P. Subject is a successful farmer, owning 125 acres of good land, ninety of which are cleared and in a fine state of cultivation. He is a worthy member of the Masonic fraternity, and in politics is identified with the Democratic party.
