Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

EDWARD W. HORR, a leading merchant of Blandville, was born in Baltimore, Ohio, October 3, 1842, and is the only boy of three children born to Asa and Eliza (Sherman) Horr, natives of Ohio, and of German and Irish origin respectively. His mother is the daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Coe) Sherman. The father is a surgeon and was an adjutant in an Ohio regiment in the Mexican war. In 1847 the family moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where the father still lives. Edward W. received a good English education, having attended the Western Military Institute, Nashville, Tenn.; in 1856-57, he returned to Iowa, where he received private instruction and studied medicine. During the war, from July, 1862, to June, 1865, he was private secretary of Assistant Surgeon-General R. O. Wood, United States Army. After the war, he returned to Dubuque, Iowa, and engaged in the hat business till September, 1869, when he came to Blandville, where he engaged in general merchandising and has been reasonably successful in his business. He has been school trustee and town trustee of Blandville for ten years or more. He was married January 29, 1867, to Miss Jane T. Rodman, of Oldham County, Ky., daughter of Judge Thomas A. and Jane E. (Talbott) Rodman, natives of Kentucky and Virginia, respectively, and of Irish origin. There were born by this union, two children, one living, Ellen Horr. Mrs. Horr is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and Mr. Horr is a member of the Masonic fraternity and I. O. O. F.
