My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

CHRISTOPHER R. PILE, Ballard County, was born in Washington County, Ky., January 6, 1825, and is the only son in a family of three children born to William and Mary (Barlow) Pile, the former of whom was a native of Virginia, and the latter a native of Washington County, Ky. They were of English and German descent respectively. Christopher R. Pile was employed on his father’s farm and in his mill and store until he attained his majority. He then purchased the saw and grist mill on Obion Creek, formerly owned by his father, which he operated by water-power for several years, but eventually put in steam-power. In 1875 he removed the mill to Arlington, where he continued the business until January, 1883, when he sold out and returned to his farm of 400 acres, three miles east of Arlington. Here he has since been extensively and exclusively engaged in agricultural pursuits and stock breeding. During the years 1873-74, he was engaged in the milling business near Boulder, Col., his mill in this county being rented. Mr. Pile has been three times married; first, in 1849, to Miss Sarah S. Cave, a native of Gallatin County, Ky., and a daughter of Daniel Cave; one daughter blessed this union, Hanie A., now Mrs. Bartell, who is the mother of an only daughter, viz.: Christie P. Bartell. Mrs. Sarah S. Pile departed this life October 23, 1857, in her twenty-sixth year, a devoted member of the Christian Church. Mr. Pile’s second marriage was in 1858, to Miss Susanna Richards, a native of Nelson County, Ky. She died without issue December 7, 1871, in her thirty-ninth year; she was a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Pile married his present wife, Miss Mattie Howie, a native of Ballard County, April 1, 1873. Mr. Pile and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is also a member of the Masonic fraternity. In politics he is a Republican.
