My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

BENJAMIN L. MOORE was born October 12, 1842, in Christian County, Ky., and is the youngest of eleven children—four boys and seven girls—born to John A. and Amelia W. (Elliott) Moore, natives of Virginia and Tennessee respectively. In 1844, with his parents, he came to Ballard County, five miles south of Ogden’s Landing, where his father purchased 1,000 acres of land, and on this farm Benjamin L. was reared. He lived with his parents till the war broke out, when he enlisted in the fall of 1863, in Company C, Seventh Kentucky Confederate Infantry, under Capt. Hinkle. He took part in the battles of Harrisonburg, Franklin, Guntown, Nashville, and Murfreesborough, Tenn.; was in the numerous skirmishes and surrendered at Paducah in the spring of 1861. He returned home and engaged in farming; at the age of twenty-five years he commenced farming for himself, and now owns 280 acres of fine land. Mr. Moore was married May 10, 1868, to Jennie Jones, of Ballard County, a native of Virginia and a daughter of Allen and Harriet (Harper) Jones, natives of Buckingham County, Va. To this union have been born six children: Benjamin E. (deceased), Eugene E., Henry Clay, Maudie, Frank J. and Birdie. Mr. Moore is a member of the Baptist Church.
