Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

A. B. HOLT was born January 16, 1838, in Calloway County, Ky. He is the third of five boys born to John and Nancy (Ramay) Holt, natives of Tennessee. His grandfather was Peter Holt, who married Elizabeth Tibble. His grandparents on his mother’s side were Elijah and Peggie (Perry) Ramay. A. B. Holt was reared on a farm, and received a common school education. He moved with his parents to Johnson County, Ill., in 1845. In 1868, he moved to where he now lives, near Ogden’s Landing, and is the possessor of 800 acres of good land in several farms, all of which he has made by his own industry and perseverance. He was married September 22, 1859, to Susan I. Gillespie, of Johnson County, Ill., born in Tennessee, and a daughter of John and Mary A. (Hogg) Gillespie. This union was blessed with nine children: William Lafayette, Tabitha L., now Henley; Florence C., now Bain; John A., deceased; Lycurgus H., deceased; Laura, deceased; George D., Ella N. and Mary A. Mr. and Mrs. Holt are members of the Presbyterian and Methodist Episcopal Churches respectively, and Mr. Holt is a Mason. He cast his first presidential vote for Buchanan in 1856, and is still a Democrat.
