My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

(Gardner) Moss. B. W. Moss was born in Kentucky in 1807, was a blacksmith by trade, and was a son of Fred Moss, who was born in Virginia. Mrs. Virginia H. Moss was born in Hart County, Ky., daughter of Elisha, a native of Virginia. U. F. Moss left his native county when a child, and went to Boyle, where he remained until he was twenty years of age. He was educated at Centre College, Danville, Ky., and taught school in Washington County, Ky., one year, then returned to Boyle County, and was engaged in farming and teaching school until 1861. He then went to Mercer County, Ky., and was engaged in farming and teaching until about 1869. He then returned to Mitchellsburg, Boyle County, and remained about two years, but in no particular business. In 1871 he went to Cincinnati to engage in insurance. He commenced soliciting on the streets, and was afterward general agent for the Aurora Fire Insurance Company, of Cincinnati, Ohio, for about twelve years. In 1884 he accepted the position of special and adjusting agent of the Kenton Insurance Company, of Covington, Ky., and remained in this position until January, 1887; he was then elected secretary of the company, which was organized in 1867, with $150,000 capital, but it now has $200,000. Mr. Moss was united in marriage to Mary C. West in 1855. She is a native of Boyle County, Ky., and a daughter of B. West. Three children blessed this union, two of whom are living: W. P., now of Ludlow, Ky., and connected with Chess Carley Oil Company, and Bettie E. Bonner, now of Nashville, Tenn. Mrs. Mary C. Moss died in April, 1871, and November 27, 1872, Mr. Moss married Miss Laura V. Estep, daughter of William H. and Bettie (Winslow) Estep. Two children have been born to this union: Anna K. and Fred E. In 1883 Laura V. died, and in 1884 he married Mrs. Flora E. (Firth) Robinson, his present wife, by whom there are no children. Mr. and Mrs. Moss are members of the Episcopal Church South. He is a thirty-second degree Mason also a member of the K. of H., and was three years Supreme Representative of that order.
