Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOSEPH HARTKE, a prominent carriage manufacturer of Covington, Ky., was born in Hanover, Germany, November 14, 1833, and is a son of Henry and Elizabeth (Borges) Hartke. He came to the United States with his parents in 1847, landing at Baltimore, Md., where they remained eighteen months, and moved to Campbell County, Ky. Joseph Hartke, a blacksmith by trade, worked in Cincinnati for a long time, and in 1866 went into business on his own account in Covington, for one year, but discontinued, and worked three years at journey work in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1871 he opened a carriage manufacturing establishment, and does a large business. He was married, November 10, 1857, to Catherine Stautberg, of Cincinnati, daughter of H. H. Stautberg. Thirteen children were born to this union, ten of whom are now living: Lizzie, Annie, Burnard, Catherine, Threasa, Mary, Josephine, Frank, Bertie and Joseph. All the family are members of the Catholic Church.
