Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN F. ELLIS, M. D., was born near Fiskburg, Kenton Co., Ky., July 13, 1840. He was educated in the common schools of Kenton County, completing his education in the high schools of Kenton and Pendleton Counties. He grew up on his father’s farm, and followed agricultural pursuits until 1864, when he began reading medicine under Dr. John Finley, of Crittenden, Ky. He attended his first course of lectures in the autumn and winter of 1864-65, graduating in the spring of 1866. He began the practice of his profession at Crittenden, where he remained two years. October 17, 1867, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Vallandingham, the third of a family of four children born to James L. and Rebecca (Stephenson) Vallandingham, natives of Kenton County, Ky. James Vallandingham, of English origin, is a farmer in fair circumstances living near Fiskburg. In the spring of 1869 Dr. Ellis moved to Fiskburg, and began the practice, which he has continued uninterruptedly since. He also owns a small farm in Fishburg, but devotes his entire time to his practice. To the marriage of Dr. and Mrs. Ellis was born one daughter, Ora by name. Dr. Ellis was the postmaster of Fiskburg nine years, and during the past two years has been deputy clerk. He and his wife are members of the Christian Church, of which church the Doctor is an elder. He is also a member of the Masonic fraternity and in politics is Democratic.
