Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JAMES M. RILEY, a farmer and stock grower in Kenton County, Ky., was born July 12, 1851, a son of Jacob and Mildred (Hoffman) Riley, natives of Virginia. Jacob Riley was a son of Thomas Riley, a native of Ireland, who moved to Kentucky about 1808, and settled in Kenton County, where he lived and died. Jacob Riley was brought up and educated in the country, and followed farming all his life. He was married about 1825, and eight children were born — seven sons and one daughter — viz.: William T., Willis M., Benjamin F., James M., Francis M., Leroy P., Henry C. and Hester A. James M., the fourth child, was brought up on the farm, and received a common-school education. He has followed farming all his life, and settled where he now resides in 1880. He has about 200 acres of land, all well improved. November 22, 18—, he married Rosana F. Pickett, a daughter of George W. and Fannie (Wayman) Pickett, of Kenton County. To this union six children have been born — four daughters and two sons — viz.: Henry C., Hettie, Harvey W., Hattie L., Myrty B. and Ora E. Hettie and Ora E. are dead. Mr. Riley is a member of the I. O. O. F. at Independence. Politically he is a Democrat.
