My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

FRED J. MEYERS was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, March 28, 1845. He is a son of Henry and Elizabeth (Wuller) Meyers, natives of Germany, who came to the United States about 1842 and immediately went to Cincinnati. In 1848 they moved to Covington, Ky., where the father died in 1849. At the age of thirteen Fred J. commenced to clerk in a grocery store, and remained three years. He then learned wire-working in Cincinnati, and when nineteen years of age opened up the wire business, on a very small scale, in Covington. He has increased his business until he now owns a five-story and basement brick, 40x150 feet, and employs about 250 hands. In 1881 this establishment became a stock company with Fred J. Meyers president. The trade of the company is by no means confined to the United States and Canada, large shipments being made to Mexico, the West Indies, South America, Australia and China. Mr. Meyers was married in May, 1865, to Miss Minnie Thoss, of Covington, daughter of Edward Thoss; seven children have blessed this union, all of whom are living: Minnie, Lizzie, Tresia, Kate, Fred, Eddie and Jennie. Mr. Meyers and all the family are members of the Catholic Church, and he, politically, is a Democrat. He is vice-president of the chamber of commerce and president of the Merchant’s Police and District Telegraph Company. Mr. Meyers started in life a very poor boy, but by care and industry is now very comfortably situated.
