My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DANIEL J. McNAMARA was born in County Clare Ireland, November 26, 1845, and is the third son of John and Anna (O’Brien) McNamara, parents of nine children: three of whom are still living. The father was born in 1801 and came to the United States in 1848. Ellen, sister of Daniel J. McNamara, married Mr. Byerns and had two children: Anna B. and Mary E. William, Daniel J.’ s surviving brother, was born in County Clare, Ireland, in October, 1847, is the youngest child, and is now engaged in manufacturing tobacco. Daniel J. McNamara was married in September, 1876, to Miss L. M. Copeland, of Louisville, Ky., and three children have blessed this union, two of whom are living: John and Louise M. Mr. McNamara’s maternal grandfather, Daniel, was killed in Philadelphia, and his paternal grandfather died in 1801. Daniel J. and William McNamara have long been engaged in the manufacturing of tobacco. The McNamara Tobacco Company occupies large and commodious premises, and the growth of the trade of this house has been a remarkable one, but is simply the reward of persistent and determined effort to succeed by a rigid adherence to a straightforward, liberal business policy. The firm carry an immense stock; their trade extends to all parts of the country, and no house in this line of business has a higher reputation than this.
