Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887. These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary. CHARLES G. SMEDBERG was born in New York in June, 1853, and is a son of John G. and Jane (Adams) Smedberg, the former a farmer, and both natives of New York. The paternal grandfather of our subject was a native of Sweden, and was a tanner by trade. He married a Miss Renwick, of America. Charles G. Smedberg was educated at Sing Sing Military School, where he graduated in 1871, and then went to Raymond City, W. Va., where he engaged in the coal business for seven years. From the latter place he went to Black Hills, Dak., and engaged in gold mining one year, when he returned to Newport, Ky., remained there one year, and then removed to Covington, where he again engaged in the coal business. In 1884 he married Indiana C. Bright, of Covington. Mr. Smedberg is a member of the Baptist Church, and in politics is a Democrat.
