Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

ROBERT C. BLAIN was born in Lincoln County, Ky., May 15, 1842, and is a son of Robert and Fannie (Thompson) Blain, of Grainger County, Tenn., and Louisville, Ky., respectively. Robert C. Blain was reared on the farm, and in 1861 enlisted in Company F, First Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry; October 8, 1862, he was promoted captain at Perryville; was with Sherman in his march to the sea, and was mustered out December 1, 1864. At the close of the war he began farming in Lincoln County, Ky., but moved to Grant County in 1877. In 1866 he married Mary Dunlap, of Grant County, who died in 1872. In 1873 he married Jennie Dunlap, daughter of Alexander and Jane (Hawkins) Dunlap, of Fayette County. He had three children by his first wife, viz.: Alexander, Fannie and Robert; and by his second wife: William, John, Bettie, Annie, Jennie, Logan and an infant. Mr. Blain owns 196 acres of land in Mason County. He is magistrate of Grant County, and a Republican.
